The Dayton Dragons are in the middle of their only trip of this season to Fifth Third Ballpark in Grand Rapids, Michigan, to take on the West Michigan Whitecaps.

The park opened in 1994 and underwent expansion in 1995, 1996 and 1998 to its current capacity of 11,123 seats. In addition to baseball, the park is also used for other events including motor sports and concerts. In the winter, Fifth Third Ballpark hosts a display of Christmas lights. In September of 2007, the first ever football game was played at the park where Grand Valley State University defeated Wayne State University 41-10.

Very few members of the Dragons have played a baseball game in Fifth Third Ballpark. As mentioned yesterday, this does mark a sort of homecoming for Dragons first base coach Tony Jaramillo as he spent several seasons as the Whitecaps hitting coach.

Aguido Gonzalez, Dragons relief pitcher, is very excited to get to play in West Michigan again. “They always have lots of fans and a nice place to pitch in,” he said.

The Dragons will continue their season-long ten game road trip by heading to Iowa to play at Cedar Rapids for three games and then on to Clinton for three more games before heading home to Dayton on July 15.
