I was sitting in the dugout during the final game of the series in which the Dragons were taking on the Clinton Lumberkings at Alliant Energy Field.  I was chatting in between innings with our Strength Coach Nigel Price and Athletic Trainer Tyler Steele when the public address announcer gave the “Trivia Question of the Day” to all the fans in the ballpark.  Granted “all the fans” does not mean tons, but it was an ok crowd for a Friday evening in Clinton, Iowa.  The question was:

Who was the First American League Player to win the All-Star Game Most Valuable Player Award twice in his career?

As everyone spit out an answer, I was pretty confident in mine, saying Cal Ripken Jr.  I left the dugout and headed to the concourse to see how I could enter the contest.  I found the customer service booth and was told it was $0.25 to enter. Yes, a quarter to turn in my answer. I figured I could probably afford that and filled out my answer sheet.

Several innings later the PA announced that I had been the winner that evening, and that Cal Ripken was in fact the correct answer, winning the All-Star Game MVP in 1991 and 2001.  I was to report to guest services to collect my prize.  Very excited and with a huge smile I raced back to the concourse to collect my prize.  It was 5 $1 Lottery Bucks that I have to go exchange in the state of Iowa for a lottery ticket of my choice. I can choose a scratch off, pick 3, powerball or a few more.

Lets just say I am not planning my retirement yet, but good things could come from this in the next few days!!!

On Tuesday July 11th, notable members of Corey’s Columbus Posse also claimed trivia glory. We had a team of nine at the Grandview Cafe and while it was the second victory for several members of the Posse, this victory was special because our team name was “Happy Birthday Leather” which is the name of one of our friends and it was indeed her birthday. The crowd was stunned as Happy Birthday Leather routinely answered questions correctly. Inspiring contributions were turned in by the Kilburgs, Rizzo, Zeller, the Meckler, the Magician, the Pretty Boy and the author of this comment. Kudos to trivia winners and keep up the good work.

In regards to my original post, the date was Tuesday July 7th. I realized this when I came to update the fact that on Tuesday July 14th a skeleton crew made up of the Gills, the Zeller, Mr. Rizzo, Mr. Bozzoli and the author of this commentcaptured a stunning 2nd place finish. Had the author been more adamant that the first printing press was developed in Germany or that the national league shortstop who won the MVP award in 1958 and 59 was Mr. Cub then a 1st place showing would have been easily attainable.
