Mike from Carolina asks: “I was at a game the other day, and one of the guys stole second, sliding. He then got to third via a single, and I could see a tear in his pants from the slide. What do you guys do with pants like that? Do you sew them up, or do they get new pants?”

Mike, thanks so much for writing in with your question. The answer is actually both, the pants get sewn up and sometimes they get new pants. If the hole becomes too big during the game, I will race to the back and get the player a different pair of pants to change into during the game. The last thing I want to happen is a player to slide again once a hole has formed, and injure himself from sliding directly on the dirt. If the hole is not too big, I will wait until after the game to get a player a different pair of pants for the next game.

The next step is to get the pants repaired and patched. Tony Caruso, who is the Head Equipment Manager at the University of Dayton, always lends a hand in patching up the pants, and does a great job of it. He is able to repair each pair of pants no matter what the hole looks like so that the player can continue to wear the pants. Like lots of things in baseball, players can become superstitious or fall in love with a certain pair of pants and want to wear them for each game.

Over the years, some pants have been deemed “unusable” for various reasons. Caruso uses these pants to cut up to make patches that will match the current pants, a process that happens quite often during the season.

As an Equipment and Clubhouse Manager, it is my job to make sure that the players look good on the field, and making sure there are no holes in the pants is an important step.

“The one constant through all the years has been baseball. America has rolled by like an army of steamrollers. Its been erased like a blackboard, rebuilt, and erased again. But baseball has marked the time. This field, this game, is a part of our past. It reminds us of all that once was good, and what could be again.”
