As the 2009 Dayton Dragons season winds down, I feel it is important to thank all of the batboys who help me out during games. They play a vital role in game operations, and most of the time their service and works go unnoticed.
Each day, the two batboys assigned to work the game arrive at Fifth Third Field about three hours before first pitch. Their first duty is to assist Assistant Clubhouse Manager Mike Murphy and myself with placing out the water coolers on the home and visitor’s bench and bullpen. After this task is complete, the batboys head into the outfield stands to help retrieve the home run balls hit during batting practice.
Following batting practice, the batboys return to the clubhouse to take care of any other odds and ends before the game starts. During the game they are in charge of running game balls to the umpires, retrieving foul balls hit on the field and returning the bats to the bat rack after the players use them.
After the game, the batboys help clean up the dugouts and return all the equipment to the clubhouse. They again assist Murphy and me in the clubhouse before calling it a night and going home.
The batboys all work very hard and are a necessity to make things run smoothly for each home game. Again, I want to thank them for all their work during the season.
