The dugout during a baseball game is a place of business, but can also be a place of fun. A majority of the talk in the dugout is about baseball and mostly about the game going on. Batters may chat with one another about what the opposing pitcher happens to be throwing that night and his pitch sequence to a given hitter. A pitcher and catcher might review hitters in between innings and coaches might study charts for hitters or pitchers from a previous outing.

But in between the business, there is plenty of time for fun, and practical jokes. One of the oldest and most fun is the bubble gum on the hat. It’s usually done to a player that is not playing that particular day, a blown up piece of bubblegum is placed on a player’s hat when he is not paying attention. This piece of gum can stay there for several innings. The joke is usually ruined by fans laughing and yelling at the player to tell him there is something on his hat.

The other day, during one of his days off, Dragons pitcher Mark Serrano tried to see how many pairs of sunglasses he could fit on his head at the same time. As you can see pictured, he was able to get seven pairs on his head at the same time.

The dugout is a fun place to be. My favorite part is the uncertainty of it. You never know from one minute to the next what will happen and what the conversation will be.
