I can remember as a kid always looking forward to Halloween.  I had a chance to dress up and look as stupid or silly as I wanted to, and run around the neighborhood getting free candy from anyone that I asked.  Most of it would go stale because I rationed it and waited so long to eat it, but the fact that I had this giant pillow case full of sugar was a dream come true.halloween-candy

While collecting the candy was fun, the best part of the evening was afterwards dumping and sorting my bag of goodies in the basement.  Then I was able to trade my sister all the stuff I did not like for all the stuff that I wanted.  I am sure she would agree that I probably took advantage of her in most trades, but hey, that’s what big brothers are for.

This year was the first time that I was put in charge of a house and had to give out candy to neighboring kids.  Not sure where I was the last few years, but this year I was back in the swing of things.  I was at my cousin’s house watching their kids and giving out treats so the house would not get egged.

My cousin left me two types of candy, full size bars and fun size peanut M & M bags.  I was given strict instructions that if a large group of kids came, give the M & M’s, otherwise the full size candy bars were fine.  I can say from past experience as a kid, I never got full size candy bars.  If you did, then you know that house had money or something!!

Well, Cousin Diane, I did not follow your rules, sorry.  Once the evening started I found myself age discriminating, giving the older kids the smaller candies and the younger ones the full size candy bars.  Not really sure why I did this, just felt the little ones deserved it more.

I decided to spend most of the night sitting on the front porch in a lawn chair waiting for the kids to come by.  I had on a plastic “Jason” style hockey mask from Friday the 13th and patiently waited jamming to my Ipod.  I did end up scaring one middle age girl, about 13, and she wouldn’t even come up the driveway, even though the rest of her friends did.

I thought it was pretty cool to see the local police, and medical emergency vehicles patrolling the area and also giving out candy to the kids.

One kid was riding between houses on his bike, and I felt like that was cheating. I understand that covering the most ground in the allotted two hours to get the most candy is the number one goal, but walk or run like everyone else was doing.  And to top it off, his costume was weak!!

Speaking of costumes, I was very disappointed in what was out there. I didn’t feel like some kids gave it much effort in what they were wearing.  The most creative of the evening was a middle aged child wearing all black, with the letters “BOOK” written on his cheeks. I was quite confused and had to ask him what he was supposed to be, and he responded, “I am a ‘FACEBOOK’ page.”  I thought they was very clever and he got extra candy.

The only other kid that I gave extra candy to was the one I made do pushups in the front yard.  I have to have some fun also, right?  He was dressed as a muscle body builder and was carrying around some weights.   I told him he had to work for his candy, so he dropped to give me 20.  I did a few pushups with him, gave him some candy and sent him on his way.

I got a good laugh out of some of the parents walking around with their kids.  A large group of them would stay on the street as their kids approached each house.  The funniest part was that they were all carrying beers, and smoking like it was a party for them.

Instead of giving treats, I did pull one ‘trick’ on the night.  My cousins Allie and Adam came up to the house looking for candy to add to their bags. Of course since they are related, they thought they deserved extra candy. So to show them, I gave them each a dog treat in a plastic bag! We all got a good laugh and then I gave them some candy.

The nicest gesture of the night that I saw was a young girl in a wheelchair coming down the street. It was very difficult for her to approach each house, as some driveways were very steep.  One of her friends accompanying her carried her bag to each house to make sure she got some candy.  A very nice friend to do that.

pumpkin I considering abandoning my post and heading to Taco Bell, as they were giving out FREE Blackjack Tacos after 6:00 PM, but thought better of it and decided to stay.   Although Halloween officially did not end until 8:00 PM, I locked the door and turned off the lights at 7:57 PM, because Game #3 of the World Series called.

I sit here typing this waiting for the game to start as they are in a rain delay.  The ONLY good thing about this delay is that FOX is playing the first episode of The Cleveland Show, and I forget to DVR that when it was first one so I am watching with interest.  Hope everyone had a great Halloween.  Feel free to comment below or email (Corey@coreybrinn.com) me some of your or your kids costumes from the night and I will post if you would like.

Corey I was very surprised that you didn’t try to steal some little kids candy! You forgot about trading with Sally across the street. This went on for days.
