Five Second Count with DOBO Andy Assaley

With all the success that the Kansas State Men’s Basketball Team is having on the court, some off the court activities sometimes get ignored.  What fans and followers easily forget is how much preparation goes into a basketball season, from travel and tickets, to meals and equipment.  The man in charge of all of this is Director of Basketball Operations Andy Assaley, who is in his fourth season in Manhattan, third in this roll.  Assaley holds a special place in my heart, being a dear friend to me and also holding the job I once had at Cincinnati.  That allows me to truly understand and appreciate what he goes through on a day to day basis.  During my visit to The Little Apple, Assaley was kind enough to answer a few questions.

Coreybrinn.com: Whose decision is it to pick what color game jersey the team wears? (The team has the option to wear White, Black, Purple and Lavender).
Andy Assaley:  We only wear the lavender tops (with the purple shorts) at home on rare occasions.  Other than that we are white at home.  This season we have been all black on road with the exception of the game at Colorado.  The players wanted to wear purple since we had done this the year before and played very well in Boulder. For the most part it is me making the decision with some input from the other assistant coaches.

CB: What is the team’s favorite pre game meal?
AA: At home they love Coco Bolo’s.  We usually have beef brisket, pasta chicken alfredo, corn, new potatoes, sliced fruit, tossed salad.  On the road the hotels are catering our meals and I try to keep it the same.

CB: What is your favorite arena away from Bramlage Coliseum?
AA: Hands down Freedom Hall in Louisville is the best.  I will be sad to see it go. The fans are right on top of you and the place is loud.  Everyone watching the game is educated on what is going on and you always have that one guy behind the visiting bench that rides you the whole time.  The fans are never over the line with their comments.  Although not great accommodations, you have to love the visiting locker room.  It is like a utility closet that everyone is crammed in, and you have to walk through a tunnel that is cut into the student section to get there from the bench.  But above this all are the cinnamon roasted almonds that they have there.  I once had a contest with an old manager (Evan Simovich) to see who could eat more.
As far as the Big 12 goes, I like the Missouri Tigers arena.  It was built considering everything from home team and visiting team to daily practices and media space.  The sight lines for fans seem great.

CB: What is the toughest ticket to get away from Bramlage?
AA:  I would say at Iowa State.  Everyone thinks it is not a tough ticket to get so they all choose to come to that game.
CB: What is the best part of your job?
AA:  Wow, that is a tough question…very hard to answer.  (I had to help him along reminding him of some things)  Oh yeah, good point, the variety and being part of so much is great.  Seeing the final project of everything that I have put together.

Thanks Andy and good luck down the stretch!

I’m a big fan of the lavender tops, they’re a nice throwback touch for the fans

They are interesting, but what I failed to mention is that they wear the lavender tops with their purple shorts, so some think they look odd mismatched. It is a tribute to the team in the ’70’s that wore them that way. I do think throwbacks are great.
