Classic Park in Lake County, Ohio

The Lake County Captains are one of two new teams that were added to the Midwest League for the 2010 season.  I was excited to make my first trip up here, as I would have the chance to see a new stadium, something I really enjoy. I like seeing how other clubs do things, and how different ballparks are set up. I always make sure to give myself a self-guided tour, and then ask an employee for the highlights in case I missed anything.

After walking around the stadium, and making in through the game, I decided that there is not much special to Classic Park, and it does not stand out to me as a great on in Minor League Baseball. Just nothing special in the park, and a few major negatives that really bring it down.

I understand you can’t hold this against the park, but the very low attendance makes for a bad atmosphere. The first night there may have been 200 fans in the seats, and about 50 of them for Dragons outfielder Andrew Means, who is from Avon Lake about 30 minutes away.

The other major negative for the team is that the clubhouse is located upstairs, in right field.  The walk across the diamond to the third base dugout is long, and makes it near impossible to run into the clubhouse during the game if you need anything.

The only bit of history that is displayed at the ballpark is buried in right field and hard to find.  There are a few small plagues honoring former Captains that have appeared in the big leagues.

What the stadium lacks, the team is making up for it on the field so far, posting the best record in the Midwest League through the early part of the schedule.  The Dragons do return here for three more series, so we better get use to the surroundings.  Enjoy the pictures below that I have included.
